The Days in Old Penobscot
Stream
Text written from memory by a lumberjack, Orono, Maine, 1916.
1      Out in Boston City
In the middle of July, When five and twenty Lumberjacks To the loved ones bid good-by,
2     We landed in Suhomuck,
All feeling pretty mean; But on we went and pitched our tent On old Penobscot stream.
3     Our work is cutting dry kye,
To clear a right of way. The hours were long, but we were strong And work hard day by day.
4     The Suhomuck once was beautiful,
Its mountains and scenery grand; The fish that's in the river Is the best that's in the land.
5     The work went rolling nicely
For just about one week, And somewhere in Suhomuck The sky began to leak.
